Sources of solar wind over the solar activity cycle

چکیده
Fast solar wind has been recognized, about 40 years ago, to originate in polar coronal holes (CHs), that, since then, have been identified with sources of recurrent high speed wind streams. As of today, however, there is no general consensus about whether there are, within CHs, preferential locations where the solar wind is accelerated. Knowledge of slow wind sources is far from complete as well. Slow wind observed in situ can be traced back to its solar source by backward extrapolation of magnetic fields whose field lines are streamlines of the outflowing plasma. However, this technique often has not the necessary precision for an indisputable identification of the region where wind originates. As the Sun progresses through its activity cycle, different wind sources prevail and contribute to filling the heliosphere. Our present knowledge of different wind sources is here summarized. Also, a Section addresses the problem of wind acceleration in the low corona, as inferred from an analysis of UV data, and illustrates changes between fast and slow wind profiles and possible signatures of changes along the solar cycle. A brief reference to recent work about the deep roots of solar wind and their changes over different solar cycles concludes the review.

متن کاملSolar Wind Plasma Parameter Variability Across Solar Cycles 23 and 24: From Turbulence to Extremes
Solar wind variability spans a wide range of amplitudes and timescales, from turbulent fluctuations to the 11 year solar cycle. We apply the data quantile-quantile (DQQ) method to NASA/Wind observations spanning solar cycles 23 and 24, to study how the uniqueness of each cycle maximum and minimummanifests in the changing statistical distribution of plasma parameters in fast and slow solar wind....
متن کاملMeridional thermospheric neutral wind at high latitude over a full solar cycle
EISCAT radar experiments over a full solar cycle between January 1984 and March 1995 have been used to construct meridional neutral wind patterns in the ionospheric F region. For locally geomagnetically quiet periods the neutral winds have been binned according to season, solar activity, and universal time. The diurnal and seasonal behaviors and the eect of the solar ̄ux are described. An empi...
متن کاملSolar cycle variations of solar wind dynamics and structures
This paper reviews solar cycle variations in the heliosphere. We show that some solar cycle changes, such as the correlation between speed and density, result from the evolution of the solar structure from dipolar with strong latitudinal gradients at solar minimum to a disordered field with little latitudinal variation at solar maximum. Other changes, such as the variation of the solar wind dyn...

Being sustainable and producing little waste products, the renewable energy knows a rapid deployment. Unfortunately, the intermittent characteristic of these energies makes them difficult to control. The influence of this aleatory character can be reduced with the coupling of two or more sources of renewable energy and secondly with a sound management of storage systems. This new configuration ...
